Healing vs Treatment

There are multiple aspects that can come into therapeutic work. Two major pieces relate to healing and treatment. Creative Core Therapy, LLC feels that both are important to include in treatment modalities. Healing is more collaborative and addresses all aspects of a person’s life using a variety of practices. To heal means to make whole while treatment involves the process of controlling and/or eliminating a disease that disrupts the healthy functioning of an individuals’ body, mind, or behavior.

NCBI Definition of Healing: “Healing is a positive, subjective, unpredictable process involving transformation to a new sense of wholeness, spiritual transcendence, and reinterpretation of life.”

Understanding the Types of Groups

Process Groups

Process groups are therapeutic groups where a group of people meet to work on their issues with help and supervision from a therapist. These groups are focused on processing the struggles and feelings related to the nature of the group. The interactions between the group members are part of the therapy, with multiple sources of feedback and ideas providing the chance to learn to connect with others in new ways and change how they deal with their problems.

Skills/Psychoeducational Groups

A form of group therapy that is less focused on developing relationships between group members, and instead, focuses on providing education through a common issue. Rather than allowing the group to guide the direction of therapy sessions, a qualified therapist leads discussions and guides clients by setting goals. Examples include Healthy Relationships, Healthy Sexuality, Understanding Grief, etc.

Support Groups

A support group is made up of people who are all working through a similar mental or emotional health situation. Support groups provide an opportunity for people to share personal experiences and feelings, coping strategies, or firsthand information. This group is not process-oriented, just a space for community support.

Art Therapy Groups

Art therapy groups are similar to processing groups, however, art-making is a part of the processing. These types of groups involve non-verbal communication. The art interventions utilized in the group relate to the people in the group who are all working through similar mental or emotional struggles.

Art AS Therapy Workshops

Art as therapy workshops are not processing space, but spaces where people come together in the same space to create artwork and bear witness to art being made by others. It is similar to a support group where the workshops are made up of people who are all working through a similar struggle. It is a chance to have support creating artwork and to share your art in a space that is not process-oriented.

Open vs Closed Groups

Open groups are those in which new members can join at any time.

Closed groups are those in which all members begin the group at the same time for smaller periods of time. For instance, a closed group may be scheduled for 12 group sessions at which point the group will end.
